The Food and Drug Administration is warning patients and health care professionals about a potential rise in the number of Viagra-tainted medications used in the United States.
The number of Viagra-tainted medications sold in the United States increased from a low of 12.2 million in 2005 to 1.2 million in 2015.
New research in New Zealand found that Viagra and other erectile dysfunction drugs, including the drug sildenafil, were associated with a 5 percent increase in the number of Viagra-tainted prescriptions in 2014.
The research was based on an analysis of medical records for more than 1,400 doctors, nurses, and pharmacists in more than 80 states and the District of Columbia who prescribed sildenafil in combination with nitrate-based therapies (NPTs).
The study tracked 1,092 doctors and nurses nationwide.
“This is a very disturbing development,” said Dr. John O’Callahan, a board-certified urologist and a leader of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) in New Zealand. “The data presented so far is troubling and concerning.”
New research by the National Centre for Policy and Clinical Research in New Zealand found that Viagra and other erectile dysfunction drugs, including the drug sildenafil, were associated with a 5 percent increase in the number of Viagra-tainted prescriptions in 2014.
The study also showed that erectile dysfunction drugs, including the drug sildenafil, were associated with a 3 percent increase in prescriptions for Viagra in 2014.
The data showed that the number of Viagra-tainted prescriptions in New Zealand increased by an average of 8.7 percent from a year ago.
“We know that, unfortunately, these medications are widely available in many pharmacies and we know that these drugs can be harmful to health and that it’s a big public health problem.”
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said that it is not aware of any evidence that these drugs are associated with increased harm.
In a statement, the FDA said it was aware of two case reports of men who took nitrates for chest pain. The two cases involved men with diabetes and heart attacks, and men who had taken sildenafil and nitrates. The FDA also says the men were not prescribed the drug for chest pain.
In addition, the agency said the drugs had been studied in animals and in humans.
“We continue to see evidence that the drugs may cause serious adverse events, such as a sudden decrease in blood pressure,” the agency said. “These are serious side effects of the medications that can result in serious heart and liver damage.”
The FDA also said it was not aware of any reports of people who took sildenafil for more than two months or those who took nitrates for more than two weeks to get a heart attack.
The drug was not listed as a controlled substance in the FDA’s list of prescription drugs.
